This Thursday, January 26 at 8:30 pm, ET, Q2 Music streams an eclectic set of chamber and vocal works from award-winning Chinese composer Huang Ruo, as recorded live on January 10 at Greenwich Village's (Le) Poisson Rouge.
The show offers a varied cross-section of Ruo's recent work, including Book of the Forgotten, an energetic multi-movement duet performed by violist Stephanie Griffin and clarinetist Vasko Dukovski and a searing performance from The Momenta Quartet of Huang's String Quartet No. 3: Calligraffiti. A continuous three-movement work, Calligraffiti captures the duality of the composer's experiences in China and New York as inspired by the visual art forms calligraphy and graffiti.
The program ends with aria selections from his recent opera Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. Premiered in 2011 in Beijing, but yet to be performed in its entirety in the United States, the work exists in two versions: one for Western instruments and one for Chinese instruments. This condensed but richly layered arrangement was conducted by Huang himself and featured the Momenta Quartet, Ensemble FIRE, and vocalists Fang Tao Jiang and Laurence Broderick.
This performance will stream Thursday at 8:30 pm with a repeat Saturday at 10 am.
