Interview: Beijing-Born Composer Zhou Long

As part of our China in New York festival, composer Huang Ruo interviews a different Chinese-born composer who has lived in the United States and become prominent to New York City audiences. Hear these interviews Monday, January 23 to Friday, January 27 12 noon with repeats at 7 pm on Q2 Music.

Though recent attention has surrounded his 2011 Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Madame White Snake, Beijing-born composer Zhou Long has been a respected fixture of the American contemporary music scene for almost 30 years. His searching approach to developing a modern style mixed with a willingness to borrow elements of Chinese origin has placed him as a model of multicultural artistic integrity.

In this interview with fellow composer Huang Ruo, the current Kansas City-native explores his folk song arrangements, his work with traditional Chinese instruments in The Five Elements and his percussive orchestral work, The Ryhme of Taigu
